The next week brought a sense of clarity as Sarah and I continued our investigation. We spent our days surrounded by piles of documents, examining every detail for inconsistencies. Our efforts were finally rewarded when we stumbled upon a memo buried deep in the company’s database.
The memo, dated months earlier, outlined a plan to shift resources from our project to another, more profitable venture. It was marked “Confidential,” and it was clear that this decision had been in the works long before the email had landed in Sarah’s inbox.
“So they’ve been planning this all along,” Sarah said, her voice a mix of anger and resolve.
“It looks that way,” I agreed, feeling a sense of vindication despite the troubling revelation.
Armed with this new information, we decided to confront Mark. We scheduled a meeting, determined to hold him accountable for the lack of transparency.
As we entered his office, Mark’s expression was guarded. He listened as we laid out our findings, his eyes betraying little emotion.
“I understand your frustration,” he said finally, his tone measured. “But decisions like these are made for the greater good of the company.”
“And what about the people involved?” Sarah challenged, her voice unwavering. “Don’t we deserve to know what’s happening?”
Mark hesitated, his gaze shifting to the window. “I’ll see what I can do to provide more clarity,” he conceded, though his words felt more like placation than promise.
We left his office with a sense of unease, but also a newfound determination. Our voices might not have carried the weight we hoped, but we refused to be silenced.
