Two days later, I received a call from an unfamiliar number. « Hello, this is Sandra from the supermarket’s head office, » the voice on the other end said. « I understand you’ve raised some concerns about customer privacy. » I felt a flicker of hope. « Yes, I found a list with personal data at the store. I’d like to know why it’s there, » I replied.
« We appreciate your vigilance, » Sandra said, her tone professional. « Our records are meant to be confidential, and we’re conducting an internal review to ensure compliance with privacy laws. » Her words seemed rehearsed, a standard response to appease me.
« I’d like to see the outcome of this review, » I pressed. « Unfortunately, I can’t promise that, » she said, a hint of finality in her voice. « However, rest assured that your information is secure. » With that, she ended the call, leaving me with a hollow reassurance.
