When I Went To The Lawyer’s Office For A Routine Check, I Didn’t Expect To See My Brother’s Signature On The Papers

The office was quiet, the kind of silence that accompanies thick carpet and heavy wood paneling. I sat across from Mr. Greene, my attorney, who had represented our family for over a decade. His desk was meticulously organized, a reflection of his orderly mind, I supposed. But today, the focus was on the manila envelope between us.
« I assume you know why we’re here, » Mr. Greene said, his voice a blend of professionalism and something I couldn’t quite place. I nodded, though I wasn’t entirely sure what was coming.
He slid the envelope across the table, and I opened it with a sense of foreboding. Inside was a document stamped with today’s date: July 15th, 2023. What caught my attention immediately was the signature at the bottom—my brother’s, unmistakably.
« These are the terms, » Mr. Greene continued, pointing to the line items that dissected our family’s estate with precision. « Your brother insisted on a quick resolution. » His eyes flicked to mine, then back to the papers.
« I wasn’t aware of any issues, » I replied, keeping my voice steady despite the churn in my stomach.
Mr. Greene’s voice lowered, « He’s been quite clear about his intentions. » The words hung in the air, a quiet line that shifted the room’s temperature.
« Can we discuss this further? » I asked, keeping my face neutral. I knew that outbursts wouldn’t serve me now.
Mr. Greene nodded, collecting the papers back into the envelope. « We can arrange a meeting, » he said, but his eyes suggested that the path forward wouldn’t be easy.
