Back at my apartment, I spread the documents across the kitchen table. The legalese was daunting, but I was determined to understand every clause, every stipulation. It was clear that my father had made these changes without consulting me or any of my siblings.
I picked up my phone and dialed my brother, James. « Hey, have you heard anything about a new will? » I asked, trying to sound casual.
« No, why? » he replied, the sound of surprise evident even through the phone.
« I found out today that there’s a new version. It’s… different, » I said, choosing my words carefully.
James sighed. « We need to get everyone together and figure this out, » he suggested. « Maybe there’s something we’re missing. »
His suggestion made sense. We needed a family meeting to discuss the implications and decide on our next steps. But as I hung up, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more beneath the surface, something that could potentially unravel the fabric of our family dynamic.
