The office was exactly what you’d expect from a midtown legal suite—neutral tones, soft lighting, and the constant hum of a distant copier. I was there for what I assumed was a routine check-in about my father’s estate. Mr. Collins, the family lawyer, sat across from me, his fingers interlaced on the desk. Without a word, he passed a manila envelope my way.

« Inside, you’ll find a recent update, » he said, his voice flat, his eyes skimming over my shoulder as if avoiding direct contact.

I opened the envelope, pulling out a thick stack of papers. At the top, my name was in bold, followed by a date: June 12, 2023. The room seemed to chill as I processed the implication of a document I had never seen before—my name was attached to a new will.

I glanced up at him, trying to gauge the situation. His expression was unreadable, a practiced mask of professionalism. The document detailed significant changes to the distribution of assets, shifts that had never been discussed with me.

« How long have you known about these changes? » I asked, trying to maintain an even tone.

He hesitated, just for a fraction of a second, before replying. « A few months now, » he said, his voice clipped.

The conversation was far from over, but I needed time to process. As I left the office, the weight of the document in my bag felt like a stone. This was only the beginning of a much deeper inquiry.
