A few days later, I arranged a meeting with the relative in question. We met at a small café, the kind with chipped tables and the faint aroma of fresh pastries lingering in the air. I arrived early, my mind racing as I rehearsed what I wanted to say.

When they finally walked in, they greeted me warmly, their demeanor friendly and relaxed. « Thanks for meeting with me, » I said, trying to match their tone.

« Of course, » they replied, settling into the chair opposite mine. « I was surprised to hear from you. »

I took a deep breath, laying the bank statement and power of attorney document on the table. « I wanted to talk about these, » I said, pointing to the papers between us.

They glanced at the documents, then back at me, their expression unchanged. « I assumed you were aware, » they said, their voice steady. « Your parent asked me to help manage things since it’s been a bit overwhelming for them lately. »

I nodded, choosing my words carefully. « I appreciate you helping, but I wasn’t informed about these changes. It’s important for me to be in the loop, especially with such significant decisions. »

They leaned back, offering a reassuring smile. « Of course, I understand. It was a bit last-minute, and I should have reached out to you sooner. »

Despite their words, a flicker of doubt remained in my mind.
