When I Checked Our Shared Calendar, I Didn’t Expect To See 3PM Every Thursday

The following week, I found myself driving across town, heading towards the café from the receipt. I arrived a few minutes past three, parking a short distance away. I watched as people came and went, my heart pounding in my chest. Then, I saw Alex, sitting at a table by the window, deep in conversation with someone I didn’t recognize.

I stayed in the car, unable to move, my mind racing with possibilities. Was this a colleague? A friend? Or something more? I wanted to confront them, demand answers, but I was frozen, unable to make sense of the scene before me.

When Alex finally left the café, I waited a few moments before heading inside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the person they were with. But they were gone, leaving only the faint aroma of coffee and a lingering sense of uncertainty.

That evening, I tried to act normal, but the tension was palpable. « How was your day? » Alex asked, their tone light but with an edge I couldn’t ignore.

« Same as usual, » I replied, forcing a smile. « Yours? »

« Busy, » they said, their eyes meeting mine for a moment before looking away. « Just trying to keep up with everything. »

But I knew there was more, hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered.
