My Mother Handed Me A Document And Said « It’s Just Business »—Then Left The Room

As I waited for my brother’s response, I decided to dig deeper. I opened my laptop, searching for any emails that might shed light on the situation. My inbox was a mess of unread messages, but one caught my eye—a recent email from our family lawyer, subject line: « Trust Amendment Discussion. » I clicked it open, my heartbeat quickening.

The email was succinct, yet it hinted at a larger conversation. « Please review the attached documents regarding the recent amendment to the trust, » it read. « We recommend discussing any concerns with your mother. » The attachment mirrored the document I’d just been handed, confirming its authenticity.

At that moment, my phone buzzed. A message from my brother: « I had no idea. What did she say to you? » Relief washed over me, knowing that he was as much in the dark as I was. But it also meant that we were both on our own to figure this out.

I responded quickly, « She just said it’s business and left. I’m trying to make sense of it. » I attached a photo of the document, hoping he might see something I missed.

As I waited for his reply, I decided to call the lawyer directly. The phone rang twice before a familiar voice answered, « Jackson Law Office, how may I assist you? »

« Hi, this is Claire Matthews, » I said, trying to keep my voice steady. « I have a few questions about the trust amendment my mother mentioned. Can I speak to Mr. Jackson? »

« One moment, please, » the receptionist replied, the line clicking as she transferred my call.
