The following Monday, I sat at our kitchen table, papers spread out around me. Bank statements, loan documents, and the final notice lay before me like a puzzle with missing pieces. Emma arrived a few minutes later, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern.

« What’s going on? » she asked, taking a seat across from me.

I pushed the envelope towards her, watching as she pulled out the document. Her eyes widened as she scanned the page, disbelief etched on her face.

« This can’t be right, » she said, looking up at me. « Dad said we were covered. »

« I thought so too, » I replied, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. « But this is what we’re dealing with now. »

Emma shook her head, her fingers tapping nervously on the table. « Maybe there’s something else. A mistake or… »

« I’ve checked everything, » I interrupted gently. « There’s no mistake. »

Silence settled between us, heavy with unspoken fears and unanswered questions. Our father’s assurances had been our safety net, one that had now vanished.
