Then he pushed back his chair and stood up to his full height. “Sit back down, man,” Scott said, still trying to keep a smile on his face even though his tone had thinned at the edges. “Come on, sit down because the second half is about to start.”
Brandon ignored him completely as he stepped forward. I stood completely still and watched as he walked right past the coffee table and the bowls of half-eaten chips.
He walked right past two of the guys who had suddenly found their smartphones extremely interesting. Brandon walked straight up to Scott without hesitating for a single second.
I watched the whole scene play out like a slow-motion movie while holding the forgotten plates tightly in my hands. I realized that I had been holding my breath the entire time.
