I had imagined police officers.
Doctors.
Teachers.
Neighbors.
Maybe even my mother.
I had imagined someone walking into our house, looking at the bruises on my arms, the scratches on my neck, the fear in my eyes, and saying the sentence I had desperately needed to hear since childhood.
“This wasn’t your fault.”
But I never imagined that the person who would finally make the truth impossible to deny would be a tiny camera hidden inside a smoke detector.
