My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney. He watched me stand before the judge and dismantle his son’s entire case with a single sentence that left the courtroom completely silent.

“Mrs. Hale, are you currently licensed to practice law in this jurisdiction?”

“Yes, Your Honor. My bar status is active, and I have brought documentation. I understand the court will need to verify my eligibility to represent myself.”

She nodded.

“Proceed carefully. I will allow you to explain your position, subject to the applicable rules of evidence and procedure.”

“Thank you, Your Honor.”

I turned toward Martin Voss.

“Counsel, I have one question before you present your client’s case.”

He folded his arms.

“Go ahead.”

“Did your client disclose the existence of the Hale Family Trust when he filed his financial statement?”
