I should have been terrified by how badly I wanted to believe all of it. Instead, I fell in love.

By the time he proposed, I no longer thought of Oliver as someone entering our family from the outside. I thought he was already part of it, woven in as thoroughly as any of us.

What I Overheard
Our wedding was supposed to be small and warm rather than extravagant. Close friends. A few coworkers. Family members who had watched me stumble through grief and slowly, painstakingly rebuild a life worth living again. After everything we’d survived, I wanted that day to feel like the beginning of something genuinely peaceful.

Two days before the ceremony, Oliver was staying with his parents across town while the last preparations came together. That Thursday evening, my house was pure chaos. Laundry tumbled in the dryer. Selena searched everywhere for one missing shoe. Harry complained loudly that wedding clothes had been “invented by people who hated children.” Mika sat at the kitchen table surrounded by colored pencils, humming to herself.

My phone rang. Oliver. I answered the FaceTime call while folding towels.

“Important wedding emergency,” he announced, grinning.

I laughed. “How serious?”

“Potentially catastrophic.” He flipped the camera toward two fabric samples. “Table runners. Blush or red?”

I held the phone farther away and glanced toward the flower arrangement sitting on my counter. “Blush.”

“You’re sure?”
