Two Days Before Our Wedding, I Overheard My Fiancé Say, “Once We’re Married, I’ll Work on Getting Control of the House and the Savings” — So I Let Him Walk Straight Into My Trap

“It works better with the roses.”

“Blush it is.” He grinned again, and for a few seconds everything felt perfectly, ordinarily normal.

Then he looked away from the camera. “Hang on, darling. Mom needs me.” The screen went dark. I assumed he’d be back in a moment, so I set the phone down beside me and went on folding laundry.

Then I heard his mother’s voice, faint but unmistakable through the still-connected call.

“Did you get her to sign it yet, Oli?”

My hands stopped moving completely. I knew that voice immediately. Sarah. My future mother-in-law.

Oliver chuckled. “Almost.”

Something in his tone made me look down at the phone. The call was still connected.
