Caleb held the envelope in both hands.

It was the hardest decision I’d made since my first husband died—but protecting my children had to come first.

Months later, Caleb left for college with a full scholarship.

Before he walked into his dorm, he hugged me and said, « I wasn’t trying to embarrass you that day. I just couldn’t let him steal my future. »

I hugged him back.

« You didn’t ruin graduation, » I whispered. « You reclaimed your life. »
