My husband left us when our 8-year-old son might never walk again — ten years later, he showed up at graduation saying, “I’m so proud of you,” but our son’s response stunned everyone.

The doctor told us there had been a slight improvement in one leg.

It wasn’t a miracle.

It wasn’t even enough for Julian to stand.

But after months of hearing mostly bad news, it felt enormous.

On the drive home, Julian talked about it almost the entire way.

“If that leg is responding better, maybe the other one could too, right?”

“Maybe,” I told him. “And we’re going to keep working.”

He smiled at the window.

For the first time in weeks, he looked hopeful.

I couldn’t wait to tell Preston.
