But the bailiff doesn’t move. Instead, he looks toward the courtroom doors, where two uniformed officers have just entered, alerted by the commotion. Behind them is a woman in a dark suit, her expression sharp and focused.
“Judge Callaghan,” the woman says loudly, “this is Assistant Attorney General Lisa Moreno. You are being placed under investigation for fraud, obstruction of justice, and falsifying a medical condition to influence court proceedings.”
The courtroom erupts.
Callaghan’s mouth opens and closes like a fish gasping for air. “This is—this is outrageous! I was injured! I—”
“You ran this morning,” Moreno cuts in, her voice slicing through his protest. “In shoes found in your private locker. Shoes your cleaning staff discovered and photographed. Shoes that contradict ten years of sworn medical testimony.”
