Lucas had not slept properly in eight days.
Judge Calder looked over her glasses at him now. Her face was not unkind, but it was tired in the way grown-ups look when they are about to ask a child to carry something heavy and call it honesty.
“Lucas,” she said gently, “I need you to answer as truthfully as you can. No one in this room should pressure you. You are not responsible for anyone’s feelings. Do you understand?”
