For four years, my son Noah mowed our elderly neighbor’s lawn every Saturday without ever asking for money. Mr. Vance barely spoke to him, and I assumed their quiet routine was just Noah being kind. Then Mr. Vance died, and at the funeral, his lawyer came straight toward my son with an envelope.

Raising Noah by myself taught me that there are some things you can explain to a child and other things they just learn by watching you.
