My daughter was still in surgery when my son-in-law asked me to sign a document. I thought it was routine hospital paperwork until two familiar names revealed someone had been waiting years for my daughter’s worst day.

My daughter had only been in surgery for about an hour when Caleb found me in the hospital waiting room.

He looked like he’d aged ten years since the ambulance brought Emily in. His shirt was wrinkled, and dried blood streaked one sleeve. I couldn’t bring myself to ask whose it was.

He stopped in front of me, gripping a manila folder so tightly the edges had bent.
