She was shivering on the side of the road, soaked through, her fur heavy with rain and dirt. Someone had left her there—an old dog, too frail to run, too polite to bark, just lying in the mud with nothing but cold hunger and silence.

They said she had been there for three days.

The rescue team found her on the fourth. Her body was skeletal beneath a layer of mud, and her legs trembled so hard it seemed her bones might snap from the effort. But she didn’t growl.
