At pickup time, my parents took my sister’s children and refused to give my daughter a ride. When she ran to the car, my mother told her to walk home even though it was pouring rain. My six-year-old begged them to take her, but they drove away, leaving her soaked and crying.

The rain came down in hard, steady sheets, turning the school parking lot into a smeared mirror of gray. I was halfway through a budget meeting—fluorescent lights buzzing, spreadsheets projected on the wall—when my phone rattled across the conference table like it was possessed.
