Everyone Told Me I’d ‘Always Be Taken Care Of’—Until One Sentence Proved Otherwise

I was sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the text messages on my phone. It was an ordinary Tuesday, and the sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the room. I’d been going through my grandmother’s things after she passed, and these messages were all that was left on her old phone. « Don’t worry, you’ll always be taken care of, » was the last thing she’d sent to my grandfather.
