I sat across from the loan officer, her eyes avoiding mine as she tapped a pen against the desk. « This is the final notice, » she said, her tone professional yet distant. « I was told everything was settled, » I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. « My father said… »

She adjusted her glasses, her expression unchanged. « The account has been delinquent for some time. Unfortunately, there’s no more time for extensions. »

A cold silence filled the room, punctuated only by the distant hum of the air conditioning. I looked down at the list of numbers, each one a reminder of promises broken.

« Is there anything else I can do? » I asked, a hint of desperation creeping into my voice.

Her eyes softened for a brief moment before returning to their professional detachment. « There’s always bankruptcy, but it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. »
