“Answer it,” I whispered, keeping my voice low. “Just don’t let on that you’re with me.”
Carol hit speakerphone.
“Mom?” Michael’s tone carried more annoyance than worry. “Why didn’t you pick up earlier?”
Her knuckles whitened as she gripped the steering wheel. “I was driving. What’s going on?”
There was a brief silence on the other end.
“Nothing much. I just need you to keep in mind what we talked about yesterday. Emily took Leo. She hasn’t been acting right lately, and if anybody asks, you need to say you’ve been concerned about her mental state for months.”
My breathing stopped completely.
Carol threw a quick look in my direction, and I silently tapped the voice recorder app on my secondary phone.
