When my son came into the world with Down syndrome, I put my signature on papers giving the hospital permission to place him somewhere else… But right as I was walking out, a nurse chased after me and said something that left me utterly shaken.

All through the night before I gave birth, I kept picturing the second they’d place my newborn on my chest. I pictured myself crying tears of joy. I pictured my husband, Brian, holding my hand tight and murmuring that our son was flawless.

But once my son was actually here, the room fell silent.

A silence so heavy it was almost unbearable.

No one smiled.

No one said, “Congratulations!”

No one told me my baby was beautiful.
