I woke up three days after giving birth and learned I would be taking only one baby home. My husband brought flowers, wiped my tears, and never left my side. Everyone called him wonderful—until a nurse quietly warned me, “Wait until he leaves. There’s something you need to see.” Half an hour later, he went for coffee. I opened her message, and everything I believed began to unravel.

For two days, I cried beside my husband over the son he said we had lost. Then a nurse placed our surviving baby in my arms and whispered something that made me afraid to look at him.

I had been thirty-eight weeks pregnant with twin boys when sudden abdominal pain sent me to the hospital. Until that afternoon, there had been no sign that anything was wrong.
