“She is your mother, not mine. If she still wants to keep buying designer clothes on Fifth Avenue, then you start paying for them.”

“Let me make something very clear, Anthony,” I said, enunciating each word carefully. “She’s your mother, not mine, and she’ll never touch a single dollar I earn again.”

Then I hung up.

When he tried to contact me again, I blocked his number without hesitation, then the next one, and the next, until the silence in my apartment felt like something I had earned and not something I needed to fill.

That night I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and cooked a meal that I had been saving for a special occasion that I had never been able to fully define until that moment.

As I stood in my kitchen, I realized that this was the moment, because I had finally stopped funding my own humiliation.
