I stood there in my kitchen with steam coming off the pot and the balloons floating over the empty chairs. Then I typed back three words.
Are you serious?
I should tell you about the morning.
Because that morning, I’d still been making excuses for them.
I got up at 5:45, like always. I made coffee. I packed Justin’s lunch. I ironed Brad’s blue shirt, the one he needed for his meeting, which he’d told me about at eleven o’clock the night before.
At 6:30, the house woke up.
Brad came down the stairs fast, knotting his tie.
“Have you seen my car keys?”
“In your coat pocket,” I said.
He checked. They were in his coat pocket. He didn’t say thank you.
