My sister-in-law was taking $1,300 from my remote work every month. When I told her to stop, she yelled at me to get out of the house. For almost a year, I worked from the corner of my brother Marco’s dining room table, convincing myself I was being practical.

“Family helps family.”

At first, it really did feel like that. I contributed where I could — groceries, toiletries, the occasional envelope of cash slipped to Marco for utilities. I didn’t want to be a burden. That mattered to me more than I ever admitted out loud.

It wasn’t obvious at first. Just a flicker of doubt when I checked my balance. A hesitation before closing my banking app. A sense that the numbers didn’t match the effort.
