« Take care of my girl tonight, » Claire said with a smile.
« Of course, ma’am, » Ryan replied. There was nothing unusual about his answer. He sounded respectful and sincere, exactly as Claire expected him to sound.
Iris hugged her mother before leaving.
« I’ll tell you everything when I get home! »
« I expect a full report, » Claire joked.
Then she watched her daughter walk down the driveway beside Ryan, laughing as he opened the passenger door for her.
Claire stood at the window until their car disappeared around the corner. For the first time in a long while, the house seemed unusually quiet. She put away the flowers’ wrapping paper, cleaned the kitchen, and tried to distract herself with a television program. But every few minutes, she checked her phone.
At 9:47 p.m., a message appeared.
« MOM. YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED. »
Claire immediately sat up.
She typed back, asking what had happened and whether Iris was all right. A minute later, another message arrived.
« I’LL TELL YOU WHEN I GET HOME. IT’S CRAZY. »
Claire smiled despite herself. She imagined Iris having the kind of unexpected, unforgettable evening that would become a favorite story for years. Perhaps Ryan had surprised her with something special. Perhaps they had won a dance competition or met someone famous at the venue. She tried calling, but Iris did not answer.
At first, Claire was not concerned. The music was probably too loud, and Iris had likely put her phone away. Still, as the hours passed, the silence began to trouble her. She sent another message and received nothing in return.
By eleven thirty, she had walked to the window so many times that she had stopped pretending to watch television.
At midnight, headlights finally swept across the driveway.
Claire hurried to the front door.Iris rushed inside first, her cheeks flushed and her eyes shining. She looked excited, confused, and overwhelmed all at once. Ryan followed more slowly, carrying none of the easy confidence he had displayed earlier that evening.
« Mom! » Iris exclaimed. « Something happened tonight, and I— »
She stopped, glancing back at Ryan.
« Actually, let me get Ryan some water. »
Before Claire could ask a question, Iris disappeared into the kitchen.
Claire turned toward the young man standing in her hallway.
« Was everything all right? » she asked. « Iris texted me that something incredible happened. »Ryan did not answer immediately.
He looked at Claire in a way that made the room suddenly feel unfamiliar. The polite smile he had worn earlier was gone. His jaw was tense, and his eyes carried an intensity that seemed entirely out of place on a seventeen-year-old boy who had spent the evening at prom.
« Ryan? » Claire asked.
His voice was quiet.
« You have five minutes. »
Claire stared at him. « What? »
« Five minutes to tell her the truth, or I will. »

The words landed with such force that Claire instinctively took a step backward.
« What are you talking about? »
Ryan glanced toward the kitchen, where the sound of running water could be heard.
« I know who Iris’s father is, » he said. « And she deserves to know. »
For several seconds, Claire could not breathe properly.
The secret she had spent seventeen years protecting had finally caught up with her. She had imagined this moment countless times, but never like this. Never with a boy standing in her hallway, never on the night her daughter had been happier than she had been in years. »How do you know anything about that? » Claire whispered.
Ryan’s expression tightened.
« Because of what happened tonight. And because I recognized something about Iris that I wasn’t supposed to recognize. »
Claire felt the blood drain from her face.
Before she could respond, Iris returned carrying a glass of water.
« Here you go, Ryan. »
He accepted the glass but did not drink.
Iris looked from him to her mother, her smile slowly disappearing.
« What’s going on? »
Ryan placed the glass on the nearest table.
« Your mom needs to tell you something. »
« Ryan, please, » Claire said.
He turned toward her. « You promised yourself you’d tell her someday, didn’t you? But someday never came. »
Iris’s eyes widened.
« Tell me what? »
Claire looked at her daughter and realized that every excuse she had prepared over the years was suddenly useless. She could not dismiss the conversation as something that would make more sense when Iris was older. She could not promise to explain everything next week. The moment she had feared had arrived, and her daughter was standing directly in front of her, asking for an answer.
« Sit down, sweetheart, » Claire said.
« I don’t want to sit down. I want to know what’s happening. »
Ryan lowered his eyes. For the first time since arriving, he looked less angry than frightened.
Claire took a slow breath.
« Your father and I knew each other a long time ago, » she began. « Before you were born, before I understood how much one decision could change the rest of my life. »
Iris stared at her.
« You told me he left. »
« I told you that he wasn’t part of our lives. »
« You said he knew about me and chose not to be here. »
Claire’s lips parted, but no words came.
The silence answered a question Iris had been carrying for years.
« Was that a lie? » she whispered.
Claire felt tears gather in her eyes.
« I should have told you the truth a long time ago. »
Iris turned toward Ryan. « You knew about this? »
« Not before tonight, » he replied. « I found out something at prom, and I couldn’t just pretend I hadn’t. »
« What did you find out? »
Ryan looked at Claire, giving her one final opportunity to speak.
She closed her eyes briefly, knowing that the next words would change the way her daughter understood her entire childhood.
« The truth is that your father didn’t disappear in the way I let you believe, » Claire said. « There were things I was afraid to tell you. Things I thought would hurt you, and things I was ashamed to face myself. »
