My sister-in-law borrowed $5,000 from my 70-year-old mother and refused to repay it, ensured she learned lesson she’d never forget

“Honey, I don’t have my savings right now.”

I stared at her, because I knew exactly how protective she’d always been of that money.

“Where did it go?”

“I lent it to Lauren. She said her car needed repairs and promised she would pay me back.”

Lauren was my brother Tyler’s wife, and she’d never put much effort into building a real relationship with Mom. Yet the second she needed cash, she’d apparently known just where to go, since my mother had always found it hard to say no to someone asking for help.

The trouble was, Lauren had always handled money recklessly. She could drop thousands on designer clothes and accessories while somehow not managing to cover the basics, and six months earlier she’d wrecked her SUV while carrying only liability coverage, which left her on the hook for the repairs herself.

I called her right away to ask when she planned to pay Mom back, since half a year had already gone by.

“When are you planning to pay Mom back? It’s already been six months.”Currencies & Foreign Exchange
