Principal shoved my autistic kid and 40 bikes were outside the school on my request

I took the phone.

The video was 41 seconds long. The cafeteria, Friday, shot from behind the serving line. The noise on it was awful, three hundred kids in a room with concrete walls, and I could see Owen at the end of a table with both hands over his ears, rocking, exactly the way he does.

Not hurting anyone. Not throwing anything. Just rocking.

Mr. Dale walked into the frame from the left. He said something to Owen. Owen didn’t respond, because Owen can’t respond when it’s that loud. Mr. Dale said it again, louder. Then he grabbed the back of Owen’s shirt and the shoulder underneath it and shoved him sideways off the bench.

Owen hit the floor on his hip. Mr. Dale hauled him up by the same shoulder and walked him out of frame with his hand clamped on it.

Four fingers. I’d been staring at that bruise for three days. Now I’d watched it get made.

I didn’t cry. I think I’d expected to. I just handed the phone back to Mrs. Tran and said, “Send that to me. Right now. Before anything else happens.”

She did. I watched it land in my texts.

Then I turned to Mr. Dale and I said the only thing I could think of.

“He was covering his ears.”
