PART 2: WHAT CAME OUT OF HIS EAR

Rosalie felt cold.

Gideon read the words.

Her face changed.

Then they found another letter.

His father wrote that the boy had overheard a conversation that he should never repeat.

Gideon closed his eyes.

The memories came back slowly.

A stable.

Two men arguing.

Money.

A shot.

And a familiar voice.

Gideon picked up the pencil with trembling fingers.

Ashford.

Rosalie stopped breathing.

—My father?

Gideon nodded.

Before they could write more, they heard horses

approaching.

Rosalie looked out the window.

His father was standing in front of the house.

Merrick was with him.

Gideon still couldn’t hear the hooves.

But Rosalie did.

His father got off his horse holding a shotgun.

—Rosalie— she shouted—, pick up your things.

She went out onto the porch.

—This is my house.

He smiled.

—Not for long.

He took out a document.

Fifty dollars had never simply been the price of a girlfriend.

They were the initial payment on an agreement regarding the ranch.

If Gideon died without an heir, certain lands could revert to the creditor who held an old debt of his father.

The name written on that contract was Silas Ashford .

My father.

Then I understood why he had sold me out to Gideon.

He didn’t want to get rid of me.

He wanted to place someone of his own blood within the ranch.

Gideon appeared behind me.

My father looked at him and smiled.

—You should have left it buried

what was in his ear.

I felt my blood run cold.

—How do you know what we found?

The smile disappeared from her face.

And Gideon understood the question even without hearing it.

Because we had just discovered something much worse than the cause of his deafness.

My father knew exactly what had been put inside his ear when he was a child.
