He looked at the bags in her hands.
« Laura, I have spent most of my life allowing other people to tell me what I should do. I worked because I was expected to work. I attended dinners because business associates expected me to attend. I maintained this enormous house because I thought that was what success looked like. »
He paused.
« And I spent six years eating dinner alone because I was too stubborn to admit how lonely I had become. »
Laura’s eyes softened.
Alexander continued.
« You’re not creating a problem. You’re bringing life into a house that desperately needed it. »
Before she could answer, a small voice came from behind her.
