Said the Car Was Mine—They Cuffed Me Anyway, Then Paid the Price

A police SUV came to a hard stop directly behind my car.

Before I even had the chance to open my driver’s door all the way, Officer Grant Mercer was already shouting at the top of his lungs.

“Step out of the vehicle! Hands where I can see them!”

For a second, I simply froze.

Then I slowly lifted both hands into the air.
