The morning after his funeral, I received an alert.

Mom had rented a moving truck.

I went straight to Grandpa’s study.

Inside, I found twenty-four birthday cards he had mailed to my sister.

Every one had been returned.

REFUSED.

Then I opened his black notebook from 2001.

The first entry made my hands shake.

“R brought L with 3 bags. J stayed in the car with the second child. L kept asking when her mother was coming back.”
