His phone had been turned off for five hours.
When he finally walked into my hospital room, he was holding a four-year-old girl I had never seen before.
She was wearing his jacket.
And when he attempted to set her down, she wrapped her arms around his neck and cried,
“Daddy, please don’t leave me again.”
I stared at my husband and asked, “Who is she?”
He waited far too long before answering.
So I asked the question that frightened me even more.
“How long have you known about her?”

“Three weeks.”
