« I gave birth to twins twenty-one days ago. »
« I know. » He lowered his voice, as though I were embarrassing him already. « But these people notice everything. You look exhausted, you’re still swollen, and frankly, you’re just not very presentable right now. »
My face burned.
Lucas sighed.
« If my boss sees that I can’t even keep my own wife looking put together, what is he supposed to think about me running an entire department? »
Then one of the babies cried upstairs.
Lucas winced.
« Exactly. Just stay upstairs with them. I’ll tell everyone you don’t feel well. »
I looked at the perfect dinner table, the food I’d spent all day preparing, and then back at the man who apparently thought I was good enough to cook for his colleagues but too embarrassing to meet them.
The doorbell rang.
