The way he’d insisted, every single year, on paying for a post office box instead of receiving mail directly at our house, always with some vague explanation about privacy I’d never questioned closely enough.

An old driver’s license, expired decades ago, the photograph unmistakably Marcus, younger, thinner, a name printed clearly across the bottom that wasn’t his.

A newspaper clipping, brittle and yellowed, folded so many times the creases had nearly worn through.
