My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney. He watched me stand before the judge and dismantle his son’s entire case with a single sentence that left the courtroom completely silent.

Not a nervous smile. Not the kind a person wears when they are unsure of what comes next.

It was the smile of a man who believed the ending had already been written.

I turned toward the judge.

“Your Honor, before we proceed, I would like to clarify one important point. I am not here because I cannot afford an attorney. I am here because I understand this case better than the people who filed it.”

The smile disappeared from Preston’s face.

Martin Voss gave a small, dismissive laugh.

“With respect, Mrs. Hale, legal familiarity is not the same as legal qualification.”

“I agree,” I replied. “Which is why I would like to place my credentials and the relevant case documents on the record.”
