The anesthesiologist looked toward security. Another nurse guided Diane firmly toward the door while she continued protesting. My mother, Susan, who had been permitted into the adjoining recovery area, heard the shouting and entered just as Diane was removed.
“What happened?” she asked.
Diane turned in the hallway.
“Ask Natalie who the father is.”
My mother stared at her.
Then she looked through the doorway at the two babies.
She did not hesitate.
“The father is standing beside his wife.”
Diane laughed bitterly.
“You have eyes.”
