My dad canc3led my ticket and texted, “walk home.” I laughed and replied, “you sure?” my dad suddenly became nervous. Five minutes later, they rushed back to pick me up. but… they were too late.

I called Dad.

No answer.
Mom ignored me too.

So did my brother Evan and my sister Chloe.

Then a text from Dad appeared.

“Walk home.”

I stared at those two words until I understood this wasn’t a booking mistake.

Two weeks earlier, Dad had asked me to co-sign a high-interest loan so he could expand Parker Signworks, his commercial sign company. His business couldn’t qualify on its own, so the lender wanted my income attached to the application. The monthly payment would have been higher than my mortgage, and Dad’s cash flow was already unstable.

I said no.
