He shook his head.
“No, ma’am.”
“My husband is a doctor. He would never do anything like that.”
The boy looked at me with an expression I did not understand at first.
Then I recognized it.
Guilt.
“I know,” he said quietly. “He told me you would say that.”
My hand tightened around the receipt.
“What are you talking about?”
The boy looked toward the store entrance once more.
