is Your Water Damaging Your Hair and Skin? Here’s How t0 Fix It.

Poor water quality can worsen eczema, psoriasis, flaky skin, and brittle hair, among other problems.

Fixes include a showerhead filter or a whole-house water filter, paired with gentle beauty products.

Maintaining healthy skin and hair can be challenging, especially when your home’s water works against your beauty and wellness routine. Poor water quality at home can worsen existing issues or create new ones, including dryness, irritation, and dullness.

While you can use certain products to hydrate and care for your skin and hair, one of the most effective solutions is to address the underlying cause directly. We consulted a dermatologist to learn precisely how water quality affects your beauty and wellness routine, and how to address issues related to poor water quality.

Hannah Kopelman is a dermatologist at DermOnDemand, an online resource where patients can consult a dermatologist without going to a clinic.

How Water Quality Affects Your Skin and Hair

The water quality you use for bathing can significantly affect your skin and hair. “When the water is hard, meaning it’s loaded with minerals like calcium and magnesium, I notice my patients often struggle with dry, itchy skin and scalp buildup that makes their hair look flat or lifeless,” notes Kopelman, dermatologist at DermOnDemand.

Water with high levels of chlorine may strip away natural oils, cause irritation, or even worsen skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. If the water contains contaminants such as heavy metals, Kopelman says it could also lead to dryness and irritation, or even accelerate premature aging by creating oxidative stress in the skin.
