The first time I saw the enormous biker walk into our NICU, my immediate reaction was that he must have entered the wrong unit. At nearly six-foot-seven with a shaved head, a thick white beard, tattooed arms, and hands covered in old scars, Wade “Grizzly” Holden looked far more like someone who spent his life welding steel than comforting fragile newborns.
Hospital policy required him to leave his black leather vest outside before entering the nursery, but even wearing a disposable blue gown, he stood out beneath the soft lights of Pine Valley Children’s Hospital. After thirteen years as a NICU nurse, I thought I had seen every kind of family walk through those doors, yet nothing about Wade suggested he belonged in a room filled with incubators and premature babies.
