For several seconds, I simply stared at him.
The lunch bag in my hand suddenly felt absurdly heavy. Somewhere inside it was Ben’s turkey sandwich, still warm from the toaster. A slice of apple pie sat in a plastic container beneath it. And tucked under the fork was the little note I had written that morning.
*You don’t have to take care of everyone. Let me have a turn.*
“Tell me what?” I finally asked.
Arnold looked toward the nurses’ station.
The two nurses immediately lowered their eyes.
That frightened me more than anything.
“Arnold.”
