her $3,000 every month for groceries, utilities, household expenses, and anything else she might need. So when I stepped onto the porch that afternoon, carrying six years of exhaustion from overseas, I expected to see my mother’s face light up. Instead, a man in a silk robe opened the door. He looked me up and down as if I had arrived at the wrong house. “Can I help you?” He was holding a glass of scotch. The collar of his robe hung open, and he looked completely at home. “We don’t buy anything at the door,” he added. I stared at him. “I’m here to see Martha.” His mouth curled
“Make it quick. We have guests coming at seven.”

And he slammed the heavy front door in my face.
