I pulled Lily tighter against my chest.
“Madison and Harper are out there playing with new toys. Why is my daughter cleaning up after everybody?”
My father, George, stepped in behind her, jaw set.
“Because she needs structure,” he said. “You spoil that girl.”
I stared at him.
“She’s seven.”
My mother let out a long sigh, as if I were the one ruining Christmas Eve.
“Nobody mistreated her. We simply asked her to be useful.”
That word hit me like a slap.
Useful.
