I was driving home late at night when my car’s headlights illuminated something strange beside an empy, muddy road. At first, I thought it was an abandoned wheelchair, partly hidden by the rain and mud. But when I slowed down, my hands on the steering wheel turned ice cold. The wheelchair wasn’t empty.
A very old woman was sitting in it, slumped to one side, soaked from head to toe, her gray hair stuck to her pale face and her thin hands hanging limply from the armrests. There were no houses nearby. No parked car. No bag. No blanket. No phone. No one calling for help. Only her, alone in the darkness, as if someone had left her there and disappeared.
